Apache Junction Seekers

Al and Linda enjoy visiting new places and having new experiences. In 2006, we spent 4 months in Europe and originally created this blog to keep friends and family informed. After a long delay, I'm trying to catch up with what we've been doing since then and hope to carry on into the future.

Photo Album..... Portugal....................

Al in front of the Lisbon tourist tram. This one is a 'historic' tram that takes you on a narrated tour of Lisbon. We also rode the #15 tram to Belem, which is a modern light rail line.

Outdoor restaurants in Cascais line every alleyway and square. Menus are posted and prices are quite reasonable. Everything we ate was excellent and we quickly established our favorites which included grilled squid and the pork and clam dish from the Alentejo region which we ordered repeatedly. The guidebooks rave about grilled sardines which were OK once and piri-piri chicken which is just a roasted chicken onto which you can drizzle a very hot chili sauce and was just so-so.

Al on the beach at Cascais. Remember that this was mid-April and the water was still pretty cool as was the air when the sun went down, but that didn't deter the Easter vacationers from enjoying themselves on the sand.

Part of a megalithic-era site west of Evora. There were lovely little wildflowers around the base of each stone. German hippies seemed to have taken up residence in the parking lot. I love these megalithic sites and make Al drive for miles to see them. This one was up an unpaved country lane that wound past farm houses and olive groves giving us a view of the countryside that we wouldn't have seen otherwise.

The wildflowers were magnificent, vast fields of them everywhere. Unlike France where the land seems to be more intensely cultivated, both Portugal and Spain had large areas of untilled land which allowed for the magnificent wildflower display.

Al on the seaside cliffs near Cabo de Sao Vicente, the south-westernmost point in Portugal. The wind was howling and vendors at the parking lot nearest the Cabo were selling heavy wool sweaters and hats. There were actually people surfing from the beach below. You needed to be young and strong to get your board down that cliff.
